Ariwo is the kind of project that could only come from a multicultural metropolis like London. Made up of Iranian electronic composer Pouya Ehsaei and a trio of Cuban musicians (Oreste Noda, Yelfris Valdes and Hammadi Valdes), the quartet makes long, drawn-out workouts that join the dots between contemporary electronica, traditional Cuban music and a touch of Middle Eastern charm. These four tracks on this debut album originated from live jams, where mazy trumpet lines and rolling hand percussion wrap themselves around Ehsaei's intricate, rumba-influenced drum machine programming. It's a blueprint that results in music that's often rhythmically dense and hypnotic, but also haunting, melancholic and strangely intoxicating.
