Joseph Byrd was a key member of the highly influential American psychedelic group UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. This band's self-titled album from 1968 was a ground-breaking work in American popular music. Following that release, Byrd put together a new band (including noted saxophonist Tom Scott) and recorded 'The American Metaphysical Circus' for Colombia Records, an LP that combines beautiful west-coast folk-rock with male and female vocals, trippy psychedelia and 'out there' sound experiments (synths, tape loops, collages) with stunning results. 'The American Metaphysical Circus' is now regarded as a landmark release of American music in the late 1960s. This CD-reissue comes with remastered sound, restored artwork and a booklet offering a new essay.
