Popis - TRIO:
The first time I, Manfred Paul Weinberger, encountered Don Thompson in Banff in Alberta, Canada, I did not yet know his music and his position in the jazz world. I was fascinated by the LPs and CDs with him as soloist or ensemble member which I heard after we met. Among them are recordings with Kenny Wheeler, George Shearing, Rob McConnell’s “Boss Brass”, early recordings with John Abercrombie and Dave Holland… I was especially impressed by the sound of the Jim Hall Trio of the ’70s—Jim Hall, Don Thompson and Terry Clark. Through Jim Hall there’s the connection to Tom Harrell with the production “These Rooms” (Tom Harrell / trumpet, Jim Hall / guitar, Steve LaSpina / bass, Joe Baron / drums). In addition to other fantastic trio productions, the CD of this quartet was an important discovery for me. Using minimalistic means, Jim Hall knows to relate melodic, rhythmic and harmonic textures in an ingenious way. I was inspired by this finely differentiated, chamber music-like music. I’ve been able to collaborate on various projects with Primus Sitter for several years. His sound and approach to music new to him have always felt natural. I’m impressed by the directness, energy and sensitivity to voicing of his playing—qualities I seek in trio music. The intimacy of a trio setting is a new experience for me. I enjoyed our time making this recording and look forward to the privilege of presenting “TRIO”. Manfred Weinberger
