Popis - FONK IS MY FATE:
This CD shows Rens Newland once again as a player (not special as a producer, arranger orchestrator or concept-maker): Guitaristic compositions, played 'live' in studio with his 'guitelectrio', bedded in very interesting lots of percussion. He presents a taste of his lifevision in spoken lyrics integrated into the music, spoken by the great coming-up rocksinger Lionel Lodge from Canada. We encounter wellknown names out of the Newland-Jive Music-Family: Fine work of Willi Langer, Oliver Gattringer, Martin Fuss, .... but also new connections were made: i.e. Stefan Maaß (from Germany) - world-percussion), Moses Afaenyi (from GHANA - african Percussion), Mani Obeya (african Vocals).... The style goes from intelligent 'worldmusic' up to hard-jazz-funk. A lot of pepper all together, fasten seatbelts, and there you go!! Rens Newland is, without a doubt, one of the most creative and productive jazz musicians within Austria. As a rule his productivity is not merely focused on playing his dear guitars, but to keep things interesting to others as to himself, he also indulges himself in composing, arranging and producing (or whatever publishing, running a record label or creating a serious bit of graphical designs through cd-cover production is being called these days). 1953 Born 1953 in Holland, Rens Newland started his musical carreer playing in and for several cross-over bands. Especially Scope was pioneering and successful (eventually it even made The Billboard Jazz Charts). The band toured in The Netherlands, but also in Germany. 1977 In 1977 he moved to Vienna (Austria), to play with the Austrian Radio (ORF) Big Band and the Erich Kleinschuster Sextet, performing with some European and American stars (concerts and broadcasting shows in Austria, Germany, Hungary & Switzerland). At this time he was also doing his first solo projects, like Electrio and 'Newland'. 1981 After the dissolution of the ORF Big Band (1981), he joined Ostinato, where he was able to unfold his talents in funky and jazz playing, as well as in writing for the horn section (he co-leaded with Thomas Böröcz). A series of albums came out and also the co-operation with Gina Charito started. The band did a lot of club and festival touring in Austria, Germany and Switzerland. 1991 In the years up to 1991 he still did a lot of featured playing, writing and producing for Austrian Radio, a.o. with the ORF Symphony Orchestra and The Moonlight Orchestra. In 1991 he co-produced the Vienna Big Band Machine album and together with Martin Fuss and Hans Salomon he founded the record label Jive Music. 1993 In 1993, he and Bumi Fian started the Enfant Terrible project with Thomas Lang, Willi Langer and Woody Scha- bata. They played at several festivals and in 1995 the first CD came out. 1996 In 1996 Rens presented the solo album (about) sexy Jazz with some of his musical friends like Joris Dudli and Herwig Gradischnig. Two other projects followed in '97: his first acoustic solo guitar album and the special septet Brassbabies & Rhythmkids, live and on CD, with Werner Feldgrill, Christian Maurer, Gerald Preinfalk and others. 1997 The brand new vibra- phone player of Enfant Terrible - Flip Phillip - turned out to be a congenial musical partner and with him Rens started 1997 the intellectual groove-jazz project Ya- cazu, a challenging band with various vocal soloists, like Cedric or Jacqueline Patricio. As a result of this interesting collaboration a cd was presented in the beginning of 1998. He also produced the new Gina Charito come-back album called Wanna make love to you. Besides that a collaboration with Gloria Gaynor started. With the Newland Band he did several international concerts (Switserland, Ger- many). 1999 In 1999 he started touring and recording with the new solo-project Rens Newland & Fonky World: a cooking guitar trio - extended with double percussion (Stephan Maaß and Moses Afanyi) featuring also Lionel Lodge with vocals and poetry. Rens and his Newland Band did some touring with The Supremes (France, Germany, Austria). 2000 In 2000 the co-operation with Lionel Lodge got more intensive: Lots of duo gigs. The new band called Rens Newland´s Groovit feat. R'becca starts performing and recording. 2001 In 2001 big concerts and touring with Gloria Gaynor (Austria, Spain, Dubai) formed the highlight. Concerts in the Ukrain, co-operation and concerts with the group Braty Bluzu from there (in Linz and Kiev) followed after that. Rens Newland also had some very succesfull openings with Lionel Lodge to Alanis Morisette and Jethro Tull concerts in Vienna. The presentation of the Lionel Lodge & Rens Newland Unplugged Project found place at about the same time. On the 2nd Willi Langer CD (The course of life), he profilated himself as co-producer, arranger and player. 2002 In 2002 the Lionel Lodge and Rens Newland CD Sailing to the sirens was released, furthermore a live CD with Braty Bluzu. Big 'Music Without Bounderies' concerts in Kiev and Kalush, Ukraine. Another interesting Jazz and Rhythm & Blues crossover project started : 'Impact Project' feat. R´Becca, and the presentation of a new voice: Marija De Silva. As a musical director he is touring with Gloria Gaynor and The Supremes again (a.o. in Schwitzerland, Denmark, Spain). 2003 In 2003 a production with exclusively compositions of his very own 'About'-cycle (created in the last days of DDR in East Berlin!) is released: The CD Move that thing, Rens Newland on jazz-guitar with his Groove Jazz Formation 'Groovit': Willi Langer on Bass, 3 great drummers in rotation: Oliver Gattringer, Joris Dudli and Christian Leitner. Guests: R'Becca (vocals), Geri Schuller (Keyboards), Flip Philipp (Vibraphone). Presentation tour in Austria. Summerfestivals with Gloria Gaynor and more international Concerts with Lionel Lodge and Braty Bluzu. In the studio and as a producer very active: a.o. D.e.w.i.e.n.e.r.s (Hip HOP), Flip Philipp (Modern Jazz), Joschi Schneeberger (swing)... Rebecca makes it into the final round of the austrian version of 'Idols'(Starmania), further work on her CD. Complete Orchestration for the CD version of the Musical 'Schlaraffenland'. 2004 Recording and release of the band-CD 'It's Not My Fault' with the Lionel Train. Recording of CD's of Heinz von Hermann, Jazzmetalex, Joschi Schneeberger Quintet. Summer festivals and East Europe Tour (Art On Ice) with Gloria Gaynor. Release of the CD 'The Bliss' (Rebecca Kolland meetz Rens Newland) Starting occasional engagement as stage musician at the 'Burgtheater'. 2005 Production and presentation of the Rocksoul Album 'Strong' plus the single 'some things are true' with the exceptionnal austrian vocal talent Christine Brezovsky! Germany tour with 'Musical Moments' (various musical stars). 2006 Release of the instrumental CD 'Freedom Street Parade' (Rens Newland with the twenty second line circus), dedicated to the people of New orleans, and The future Some touring with Gloria Gaynor, 22nd line circus.. CD projects with Christine Brezovsky, Lynne Kieran, Kai Peterson. And a Blues project is going round in some heads...
