Popis - L'ENTREDEUX:
Chanson meets Americana in Marianne Dissard's enchanting debut album, co-written & produced by Joey Burns of Calexico. Website: http://www.myspace.com/mariannedissard Music Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay8huXCPUkM Featuring Katerine, Dominique A. PRESS: 'This album is one of the marvels of the year' Magic/France - 'Disconcerting and captivating' Pariscope/France - 'One of the best albums I've heard this year' Froggy's Delight/France - 'A captivating album' GreenMan Review - 'Magnificent merging of old European elegance and poignancy of the songs with the glaring loneliness of the American Western Landscapes' Der Spiegel/Germany - 'Pick of the Week: The surprise is Dissard. Her work has a lovely, mournful lilt, a sort of Parisian blues. Even those of us who don't speak French cannot help but be touched by the stark beauty of her phrasing.' LA Weekly/USA “L'ENTREDEUX” Tucson-based, French-born singer and lyricist Marianne Dissard's first album, L'Entredeux, was co-written and produced by Calexico's frontman Joey Burns. At the junction of Chanson and Americana, L'Entredeux is not just another Calexico intervention but truly Marianne and Joey's album, stemming from a long friendship that dates back to the early 90's and a shared affinity for French wines, Mexican food, old adobe houses and the photographs of Gary Winogrand. Not to mention the recordings of Nick Drake, Nico, Serge Gainsbourg, Django Reinhardt and the western movies of Ennio Morricone and Sam Peckinpah. The French-language album was recorded in their hometown of Tucson, Arizona at Wavelab Studio. The cast of collaborators was drawn from far and close: from Tucson, John Convertino (Calexico) on drums; Na?m Amor (who also composed three of the tracks) and Matt Mitchell on guitars; singer Adrianne DeNike, violinists Vicki Brown, Rose Todaro and Michael Fan and Nick Luca on guitar. From the road, the east coast and across the Atlantic, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson) on harmonica; Rob Burger (Tin Hat Trio) on piano, accordion, orchestron, cimbalom and organ; French singer Sammy Decoster (Tornado). BIO: Calexico fans will recognize Marianne as Madame to Joey Burns' lovestruck gold digger on Calexico's hit single, 'Ballad of Cable Hogue' from their 2000 album Hot Rail. She directed the Giant Sand documentary, 'Drunken Bees', featuring Howe Gelb, Victoria Williams, Rainer. A lyricist, poet and activist, documentary filmmaker and multimedia performance artist, singer Marianne Dissard was born within sight of the Pyrénées mountains in the South of France but has lived in the American West since the age of 16. Her lyrics have been sung and recorded by Françoiz Breut, Howe Gelb and Na?m Amor. During the 2004 US presidential election, Marianne launched the Tucson Suffragettes, a gang of sexy downtown vixens who went after 'virgin voters', enlisting the help of Linda Rondstadt, Chuck Bowden, Shepard Fairey and the Tucson music community. As a documentary filmmaker, she has collaborated with director Robert Kramer and poster artist Robbie Conal, and directed the Giant Sand documentary 'Drunken Bees'. As a multimedia performance artist, she was exhibited at the Musée d'Art Moderne, Paris (Hiver de L'Amour), then got subsequently invited to the Musée D'Art Contemporain, Marseille by Philippe Vergne (Walker Art Center) and to Foundation Cartier in Paris. Marianne, no longer hiding behind a camera or her words, now wishes she could have sang with Johnny Cash and Jean Sablon but hopes she can still duet with Scott Walker one of these days. She has, however, duetted with Na?m Amor on the 2001 album T?te A T?te/ABBC by Amor/Belhom/Burns/Convertino, and is featured, with Jane Birkin, Françoiz Breut and other filles, on the 2007 Filles Fragiles CD compiled for Dutch label Essential Dance Music. Marianne contributes to the upcoming tribute to American folksinger Kath Bloom by Australian label Chapter Music and to compilations that include the Christmas In Tucson CD produced by Olivier Mosset with tracks by Bob Log III, Al Foul and other garcons. For that release, Marianne collaborated with Jonathan Richman's drummer Tommy Larkins to cover the 1980 British hit, 'Stop The Cavalry'. She also wrote an original Christmas song with Amparo Sanchez of Amparanoia for Germany's Trikont Christmas 2008 compilation. Finally, UK label Regular Beat released in the spring 2008 a split 7 inch vinyl with Alaska in Winter, featuring Beirut, on the flipside. A first 7 inch vinyl (4 tracks with bonus 11 tracks digital download), recorded with Joey Burns on guitar, was self-released in the spring 2006, selling out shortly afterwards. These home-recorded tracks were the demo to the subsequent studio album. MORE PRESS - FRENCH - “Vaporeux et sensuel. VOIR.CA - Matthieu Petit - ENGLISH – 'Enchanting' NOW TORONTO - Tim Perlich 'Fabulous. Stunning.' OTTAWA XPRESS - John Sekerka 'Stunning Frenchwoman despite years of living in Tucson, she had great songs, a fine voice and excellent delivery. Very classy, but straightforward too. Hard to characterise, excellent.' RADIO3.CBC 'Weds the cabaret/chanson tradition with Americana. Where such a mix could easily have come across as contrived in someone else's hands, Dissard makes both forms sound like they were meant for each other. French may be the language of love, but the emotional punch of the music comes from Dissard's delivery. So natural is her approach, in fact, that after a short time her French lyrics don't sound novel or even foreign at all. Clearly, Dissard isn't pandering to anyone's yen for exoticism. Instead, she plumbs for the soul of both traditions and re-invents them both.' ROCHESTER CITY NEWSPAPER - Saby Reyes-Kulkarni 'Unusual mixture of French and American Southwestern influences' TRIBUNE MONTREAL 'Striking in its ability to seamlessly fuse styles that seemed previously to be wholly disparate.' BUFFALO NEWS - Jeff Miers 'Her stage performances are a seductive mingling of catchy melodies, with her deep, raspy voice emanating a haunting sense of longing.' ART VOICE BUFFALO 'Heart-melting debut that beautifully melds Southwestern noir with the husky, unequivocal whisper of chanson. An intimate and amorous album. What sets Dissard apart from the rest of the chanteuses riding the Francophile wave is her delivery—subtle, slightly spitty and the most effective aphrodisiac since Benjamin Biolay’s Trash Yéyé.' PHILADELPHIA WEEKLY - Caralyn Green 'A fair presence, a true-to-form throaty alto, and enchanting French lyrics.Marianne's vocals have been called breathless, but that makes her out to be a lo-fi chanteuse a la premiere dame. I'd say she sounds more like a scaled downTetes Raides. Think of a female performer who embraces the poetry of Leonard Cohen and the litheness of a panther - that's Marianne Dissard. Live, she performs with an abandon that compliments Calexico's technique - not AIDS WOLF, try Ida Maria.' TORONTO BLOG - Matthew Hayles 'The effect is magical' DEMOCRAT&CHRONICLE - Jeff Spevak 'An enchanting listen' NEW HAVEN ADVOCATE
